Abba continued to shine academically, graduating as the overall best medical student at ABU, Zaria in 1989/90.

“Meet Sarki Abba from Kano State, the genius that was made to rewrite WASCE after scoring 9 distinctions In 1984, 16-year-old Abba, a student of Science Secondary School Dawakin Tofa, scored 9 distinctions (8 A1 and 1 A2) in his West African Senior School Certificate (WASCE) Exams. "Examination authorities in Lagos didn't believe Abba made those excellent scores without cheating. The authorities provided a car that took Abba to Lagos in order to retake the exam. Abba was made to take the 9 exams in a duration of 3 days, under heavy supervision.

"After marking the rescheduled exams, he scored 9 A1 (the only 'A2' he had in English Language before the retake, became 'Al' resulted to 9 A1) Faced with shock, the authorities apologized and instituted the National Merit Award. And, rightfully, Sarki Abba was the first recipient of the award.

It was also gathered that the same man emerged as the overall best graduating and best medical student at ABU Zaria.

"In 1989/90 school session, 21, Sarki Abba graduated as OVERALL BEST Medical Student, and OVERALL BEST Graduating Student at ABU, Zaria- he was just 21. Zara shared the remarkable feat accomplished by Awofeso, who was named the overall best-graduating student at Air Force Secondary School in Ikeja, Lagos.

In her post, Zara expressed her admiration for Awofeso's exceptional performance and congratulated her on the remarkable grades she achieved across various subjects in WASSCE.

Awofeso received the highest grade of A1 in Civic Education, English Language, Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Animal Husbandry, and Computer Science.

She wrote: “Love celebrating brains, Excellence, Condour. Congratulations my baby AWOFESO AISHA OMOTOLA. She is the 2023 Best Overall graduating student Air Force Secondary School Ikeja. Lagos.”

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) had recently announced that 1,621,884 candidates registered for the 2023 edition of the exam. The body, however, said 1,613,733 sat for the examination.

“A total of 1,287,920 candidates, representing 79.81 per cent , obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
