Oyotunji village was established in 1974 in North Carolina

A notice at the entrance of the gate says once a tourist enters the village, the person is exiting the United States and entering a separate enclave.

The notice adds that the village was established to pay tribute to the Yoruba ancestors.

A piece on the village's website reads:

"Oyotunji African Village (OAV) is the first intentional community based on the culture of the Yoruba and Dahomey tribes of West Africa; founded (1970) in the Americas. OAV is positioned as the pinnacle center for learning, exploring and celebrating the ancient traditions and culture of the Yoruba people of present day West Africa."
