Lawsuit alleges that film misled villagers in Glod, Romania
Lawyers representing residents of a Romanian village in a $30 million lawsuit against the “Borat” filmmakers have been told that for their lawsuit to proceed, they must make more specific legal allegations.
The suit, which lawyers said would be refiled, alleges that Springland Films and 20th Century Fox misled residents of Glod, a remote Romanian village, telling them that the film in which they were participating was a documentary about poverty in Romania.
U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska said Monday that the lawsuit would have to include more specifics about how the villagers were misled before she could ask the defendants to offer up documents that could help the villagers build their case.
In the satirical “Borat,” the Romanians are stand-ins for backward and boorish residents of Kazakhstan.

Pic, written by and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, has made $116 million at the domestic B.O.
The villagers are not the only people who appeared in the film suing over “Borat.” Two members of a U. of South Carolina fraternity have filed a lawsuit on similar grounds. And Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred is seeking an investigation about how the consent of her client, Cindy Streit, the owner of an etiquette training service in Alabama, was obtained.5
