Profession: Entrepreneur and Presidential Candidate
Biography: Ross Perot founded Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and ran for President of the United States as an independent candidate twice.
Perot began his career in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1953 to 1957. After leaving the Navy, he became a salesman for IBM. In 1962, Perot started his own company, EDS, which provided data processing services to businesses and government agencies.
EDS grew rapidly, and Perot became wealthy when General Motors bought a controlling interest in the company in 1984. This transaction made Perot a billionaire. He used his wealth to fund various ventures, including a rescue mission for EDS employees held captive in Iran in 1979.
In 1992, Perot entered the political arena by running for President as an independent candidate. His campaign focused on economic issues, particularly the national debt and trade policies. Perot won 19% of the popular vote, the highest percentage for a third-party candidate since 1924.
Perot ran for President again in 1996 as the Reform Party candidate, which he had founded. This time, he received 8% of the vote. His campaigns were known for their use of infomercials and Perot's colorful speaking style.
