After a legendary run, Hawaiian diva Sasha Colby snatched the well-deserved crown as the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15. This new title for Colby is definitely a powerful protest in the advancement of transgender rights.

Sasha Colby is the Newly Crowned Winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race

Last Friday night, Colby was announced as “America’s Next Drag Superstar,” amid finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15. Consequently, the drag diva went home with her shimmering and illustrious crown, alongside a $200,000-prize.

Colby won after a sultry Medusa-inspired performance of her original composition “Goddess.” During the last stretch of the competition, she flawlessly executed lip sync to Amii Stewart’s “Knock on Wood,” defeating runner-up Anetra.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Colby revealed that her last performance had already been set, regardless of who she will go against in the Finale. According to her, she’s decided since then that “stillness and grace” will be her weapons.

“Whoever it was, it was going to be exactly what I was going to do,” she said. “I was performing with girls that are 10 years younger than me, they’re boppers and jumpers and all that, and I knew I could sit in my experience.”

Since the beginning of the competition, Colby has impressed majority of the fans during the season. Week after week, her performances have served, as seen in her foolproof runway looks and impeccable skill during acting and dancing challenges. Elsewhere in the series, RuPaul Charles stated that even as the queen of drag, she’s amazed by Colby.

She Says Trans People are “Not Going Anywhere”

Adorably branded to be “Mother” by her fans, Colby is an LGBTQ+ icon. Yet, it’s natural the she’s particularly fighting for trans rights. Hence, her win is indeed a testament to what trans people can offer.

“This goes to every trans person past, present and future, because we are not going anywhere,” she said.

As she dedicated such victory to the queer community, she also hopes that the allies are proud of her. She also recalled her thought process as she vies for the crown. For her, she wasn’t simply trying to win, she was aiming to shut down transphobes who want to silence them and their potential.

“I wanted them to see what they’re trying to eradicate,” Colby said. “I wanted to normalize this trans body!”
